This guide will take you the step-by-step process of installing artificial turf. To ensure a successful installation, make sure you have the right materials on hand; decomposed granite, your synthetic grass choice, nails and infill. Here's all you need to know!
Remove any rocks or sod in your project area. Even though, weed killer is not required, it will help prevent weeds from popping up through the surface in the future.
After cleaning your area, add a layer of decomposed granite. Compact and level your area. This will make the base sturdy enough, ensuring a secure, long-lasting grip for nails.
Unroll your artificial grass flat surface, if needed, us a sharp blade to cut the roll into a piece that fits your area.
When cutting, fold the turf back and hold it tight against the meeting object. Take your time to ensure small outward relief cuts, this will allow to shape the cuts seamlessly around the objects.
This step is only necessary if you have to put together multiple pieces.
Before glueing together the pieces, ensure the fibers are facing the same way. It’s usually easy to spot if the pile is in the wrong direction, as the grass will look a slightly different shade of green. When aligning the adjoining turf, make sure they butt up against each other so there is no gap and no overlap.
Stretch and nail down the turf along the perimeter. Stretching the artificial grass on the sides is very important. It will help to prevent wrinkles and buckling over time.
Make sure that the nails are hidden and deep and don't grip any fibers. Use non-galvanized nails to ensure the nails won't come up over time. We also recommend nailing every 2/3 ft. throughout for added stability.
While many cut corners on this step, adding infill in turf applications offers multiple benefits. This will help keep your fibers up, reflect UV rays, and even prevent wrinkles!
We'd recommend using an anti-bacterial infill such as Zeofill and Neutrafill. This will ensure your area is fresh, cool and cleaner for pets and/or recreation.
Lay approx. 1 lb. per sq. ft depending on artificial grass thickness upgrade accordingly.
Brush to evenly distribute the infill across the surface. Overlapping your passes to ensure that all of the infill is evenly distributed, and the blades are standing upright will result in a profesional install look.
